Build a Legacy with Habitat for Humanity of Sonoma County

It takes a truly generous spirit to plan for the benefit of people you may never meet, and our Planned Giving Society exists to honor these thoughtful, forward-looking supporters.

Join us in creating a lasting legacy for Sonoma County by becoming a member of our Planned Giving Circle.

Make a meaningful impact for your children, your grandchildren, and generations to come. Membership has just two simple requirements:

  1. Make arrangements to benefit Habitat for Humanity of Sonoma County beyond your lifetime. This can include a bequest in your will or a plan that provides life income and potential tax benefits, such as a Charitable Gift Annuity.
  2. Let us know about your plans. You don’t need to specify a dollar amount, but sharing some details helps us plan for the future and is greatly appreciated.

While Habitat cannot provide legal or tax advice, we work with Planned Giving experts who can provide information using the latest tools and help you explore your options in preparation for a consultation with your professional advisors.

Planned Giving Options

  • Wills and Family Trusts

Your estate plan can create a lasting impact for Sonoma County families. In your will, you may choose to leave Habitat for Humanity of Sonoma County:

    • A specific amount of money
    • A percentage of your estate
    • All or part of the residue of your estate after loved ones have been provided for
  • Minimum IRA Distribution after Age 70½

If you are required to take annual distributions from your IRA, you can redirect those funds to Habitat for Humanity of Sonoma County. Doing so may reduce your taxable income while supporting local families in need.

  • Gifts of Stock

Donating long-term appreciated stock can provide you with a full tax deduction for the market value and help avoid capital gains taxes, while supporting Habitat’s mission in Sonoma County.

  • Life Insurance Policies

Existing or new life insurance policies can be used to create significant, lasting impact for Habitat families while potentially easing estate tax burdens.

Bequest Language

Planning a gift in your will or living trust is one of the most effective ways to ensure your legacy endures. Your gift may be a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, or the remainder after other provisions.

  • Sample Unrestricted Bequest Language:

“I give to Habitat for Humanity of Sonoma County, a nonprofit corporation currently located at [address], or its successor thereto, _________ [amount or percentage of estate] for its unrestricted charitable use and purpose.”

  • Sample Designated Purpose Bequest Language:

“I give to Habitat for Humanity of Sonoma County, a nonprofit corporation currently located at [address], or its successor thereto, _________ [amount or percentage of estate]. This gift should be used for (state purpose) if and so long as Habitat for Humanity of Sonoma County determines the need exists. If the need does not exist or cannot be administered as intended, Habitat may, at its sole discretion, redirect the gift for a related purpose.”
