Sacramento for Advocacy Day 2025
On January 28 & 29 2025, over 80 people from California, 35+ Habitat for Humanity affiliates headed to Sacramento to advocate for solutions to make homeownership more accessible for all Californians! Team Habitat made their mark, and we’d like to share some of the successes with you:
- Habitat affiliates met with 113 legislators and staff members.
- Recruited 13 legislators eager to champion our CalHome budget request for $280M, plus over 60 members who are “likely to support.”
- Gained 15 co-authors that will join Senator Anna Caballero and Assemblymember Cecilia Aguiar- Curry as they champion the President Jimmy Carter Day resolutions in both houses, bringing more awareness to the need for financial support of CalHome and homeownership production in the State of California. Nearly all the members we met indicated they will support the resolution when it comes to the floor.
We also educated 25 new members of the California Legislature about Habitat for Humanity and the importance of homeownership on the housing continuum, sparking new relationships and partnerships.
A huge thank you to Senator Mike McGuire, Assemblymember Chris Rogers, Assemblymember Cecilia Aguiar-Curry, and all the legislators who took the time to meet with us. Together, we can make homeownership a reality for Sonoma County residents.
*Advocacy Day is an annual event where we come together with a unified voice in support of homeownership in our state. We meet with our elected officials and share with them our stories, our challenges, and let them know what they can do to help Habitat affiliates across California provide even more life-changing opportunities for affordable homeownership
Why We Advocate
Habitat for Humanity of Sonoma County is committed to promoting affordable housing opportunities for all. We urge elected leaders to support policies that prioritize the housing needs of low income families. And we advocate for changing systems, attitudes, policies and institutional behaviors that help prevent future poverty housing. Join us!
Right Now In California
- 36% of homeowners and 48% of renters spend more than one-third of their income on housing
