Frequently Asked Questions

No, Jimmy Carter did not start Habitat for Humanity. He grew up just a town over from Habitat’s birthplace in Plains, Georgia, and was familiar with the organization from its early days. Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter had been lifelong volunteers, helping build homes alongside families, and their involvement has shone an international spotlight on Habitat for Humanity’s mission.

Yes! Habitat for Humanity of Sonoma County has been helping families achieve affordable homeownership since 1984. While Habitat for Humanity is a nationally recognized organization, our local affiliate is dedicated to serving the Sonoma County community directly.

Although our office is located in Santa Rosa, we build homes and support families and community members throughout the county. All funds raised or donated to Habitat for Humanity of Sonoma County stay local and are reinvested right here in our community.

We were founded in 1984. Since then, we’ve helped 48 families move into new, affordable homes, repaired 117 homes, and supported hundreds of community members through homeownership and home repair programs.

Prospective homeowners must have an income within 60%-80% of the median household income in Sonoma County. Families are also required to meet need, employment, income, and “sweat equity” labor requirements.

To see if you qualify for a Habitat home, please visit our Become a Habitat Homeowner page.

Homes are matched to families by size and need; families do not choose the location. This ensures homes are appropriate for household size, budget, and long-term stability.

We are currently not accepting Home Repair requests, as of early 2026. Please check back for future announcements and application openings.

Our goal is to upgrade entire neighborhoods. We build on unused, underutilized or empty lots, improving the overall community with proud, responsible homeowners. We also employ green building practices for sustainability and participate in Rock the Blocks and neighborhood revitalization projects, cleaning up and fixing neighborhoods to create safer, healthier spaces for everyone.

Yes! Our ReStore on Piner Road in Santa Rosa specializes in home improvement items—from building supplies to cabinets, flooring, tools, and furniture. ReStore proceeds fund Habitat’s homebuilding programs (so you’re shopping with a cause when you shop at ReStore!)

Yes. Skilled professionals complete specialized construction tasks, while passionate volunteers work alongside them to support every stage of the build. Last year alone, volunteers contributed over 3,000 hours to Habitat for Humanity of Sonoma County. Together, professionals and volunteers play a vital role in building safe, affordable homes (because teamwork truly makes the dream work!)

No. Habitat homes are sold with affordable, manageable mortgages and built with support systems, education, and financial screening to help partner families succeed as long-term homeowners.

Costs vary depending on location and type of home. Donated land, volunteer labor, and in-kind contributions help reduce construction costs, making homes affordable for local families.

Construction sites: Volunteers must be 18 years or older, or be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

ReStore: All volunteers must be 18+.
